about

SON CATS are a psychedelic blues-rock group hailing from Portland, OR. The Cats have also lived in the backseat of a Honda Accord and done time in Missoula, Montana and Brooklyn, New York. Alex Reed Wilson howls and rips on the guitar and Jasmine Dreame Wagner thrashes the drums.

The high-impact duo invoke these kinds of sounds: Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers watching Kurosawa's Seven Samurai, The Vaselines watching Dock Ellis try to bean every member of the 1974 Cincinnati Reds, CCR making a soundtrack for a Clint Eastwood movie written by Arthur C. Clarke. Imagine The Shaggs muscling The Shags in an arm wrestling match.

About the record: "O'Dell / 1971" was recorded by Alex Wilson and mixed by the band using Wilson's Tascam 488 8-track machine. The tracks were mastered straight to vinyl by Roger Seibel at SAE Mastering and the digital download was mastered by Carl Saff at Saff Mastering. The cover artwork and insert were designed by Jasmine Dreame Wagner and printed at Pinball Publishing in Portland, OR.

Reviews:

“A two (sometimes three) piece from nearly every time zone in the US, [Son Cats] put all of the ‘ooooooo’s in groovy. These cats (no pun intended) put out thick rock and roll waves that drown your brain in a hazy maple flavored smoke. The two tracks on this 7’’, O’Dell and 1971, are packed with truck loads of pure energy. Without any post-production sort of static-magic, these two fill up a lot of dead air with primitive skin-pounds, wailing guitar riffs, and genuine vocals. Combining folk, 60s psychedelic garage, and pure rock and roll - SON CATS piss excellence.”
-Jesse Allan Rozell, Die Pop Blog

“Both cuts are prime slabs of 60s tinged, sleazy rock’n'roll voodoo designed to make the sweat run down the walls and the neighbours bang on the floor in despair. It’s all good!”
-The Mad Mackerel

“This debut seven-inch could quite easily be interpreted as a double A-side” -Chuybucca Sounds

“Play now! Kick ass (it sounds like it’s 1971!)”
-Mr. Esq, KZSU 90.1 FM
